What was your most memorable Gravel Worlds experience?

“My most memorable experience at Gravel Worlds 2024 was riding up to the mile 60 oasis. This aid station stop was on both the 75-mile and 150-mile course, making it full of riders doing each event. The atmosphere at the oasis was so uplifting and inspiring. The music was pumping, athletes were hugging or high fiving the miles already behind them, and volunteers were bustling around grabbing food and drink for riders and the journey still ahead. The diverse group of athletes surrounding me each had their own unique story that brought them to the event. I was in awe of the determination and passion that radiated from each cyclist. From college students on borrowed bikes to retirees exploring the country on two wheels, everyone had a different reason for being there. Some were focused on improving their health through cycling, while others were using the event as a way to spend time with a family member. Some showed signs of near exhaustion as they were pushing their bodies to the limit. Despite our different backgrounds and goals, we were all united in our love for cycling and the challenge of the day. This sense of community and camaraderie at the mile 60 oasis is a memory that I will always cherish as I think back on this experience and the “Gravel Family.’”

What did this experience teach you?

“At Gravel Worlds 2024, I learned that taking a step back and trying something new can lead to unexpected growth and success. As someone who had worked very hard to earn my elite license in triathlon, it has been devastating to experience injury and disappointing race results due to both injury and lost years of training. However, when I turned to gravel riding as a way to continue some movement while rehabbing a torn hamstring, I found a new sense of enjoyment and accomplishment. At Gravel Worlds, surrounded by fellow riders and the beautiful outdoors, I rediscovered my strength and passion for riding.”

Was there anyone who made this day special for you?

“One of the things that I greatly appreciated about the event was the emphasis on the gravel community. There are a number of people (many more than I’ll name here) who made the day so special for me, and I couldn’t have done it without them! Earlier this year, Jenny Fletcher (@jenfletchtri) took me on the gravel roads during my injury rehab. She is also the one who encouraged me and gave me the confidence to sign up for this event. Jason Savill (@jasonkiwitx) at Endur3 bikes was not only extremely knowledgeable and helpful in selecting the perfect bike for me, but he also became a great training partner on the rides with he and Jenny.
